It’s 1934 in a small Oklahoma town as
young Henrietta English loses both parents
within a week and comes home to find her
mother may have committed suicide, her
banker father died bankrupt, his best friend
wants to make her his mistress, and her
past lovers (a lesbian teacher and a black
musician) are hot on her trail. In a fit of
desperation, Henrietta marries local college
instructor, George Sherman. Besides being
the most boring man in town, George brings
his two old aunts to live in Henrietta’s
heavily mortgaged family home.
